Why Earth River On The Futaleufu
- For over 36 years, Earth River has been exploring remote corners of Patagonia. Our relationships with local communities, naturalists and lodge partners allow us to offer access that few outfitters can match.
- This itinerary was designed from decades of on the ground exploration. Each hike, lodge and viewpoint was chosen for its beauty, safety and distinctive character.
- Your guides are trained in advanced wilderness first aid, navigation and Patagonia specific field safety. Every day is planned with weather, terrain and guest experience in mind.
- Small groups sizes so guests enjoy more time with guides, more flexibility on the trail and a more meaningful connection to the land.
- Instead of carrying heavy packs or camping in unpredictable weather, you stay in a curated selection of cozy lodges that keep you close to the wild landscapes while ending each day with a warm bed and great meals.

This hike offers us the only vistas of the two lakes combined and the farmland of the Espolon Valley.
Day 6: Uman Lodge/ Futaleufu River Trail/ Peuma Lodge (10 miles-medium difficulty)
Today we have a 20 minute drive to the start of this trail located in Sector Las Escalas. The Futaleufu River trail was designed and built by Earth River to combine the stunning emerald waters of the Futaleufu river with the intimacy of hiking through old growth hardwood trees, some as big as redwoods. This is a one way trail that goes through the heart of the river and offers an uninterrupted wilderness experience. Some of the scenic highlights are class 6 Zeta rapid and the granite monoliths that rise hundreds of feet straight out of the river.
Day 7: Peuma Lodge/ Blanco Falls (6 miles- medium difficulty)
After a 20 minute drive we arrive at the starting point of our first waterfall hike. This hike brings us up one of the tributaries of the Futaleufu called the Rio Blanco. As we get higher in elevation we are offered spectacular views of two glaciers across the valley, one of which we will get the chance to see up close in the upcoming days. With white granite walls rising hundreds of feet in a box canyon out of the river, the trail ends at a gorgeous 60 foot waterfall with crystal clear green water. At the base of the falls there is a perfect fishbowl that offers an ideal place to cool off on a hot day. (bring your bathing suit)
Day 8: Peuma Lodge/ Lago Obsession (7 miles- hard Difficulty)
Leaving directly from the lodge we hike through an enchanted forest of ancient hardwood trees, past impressive waterfalls to stunning Lago Obsession. With its dramatic landscape of sculpted stone, snow and ice, this miniature, hanging blue lake is a rarely visited scenic highlight of Patagonia. The views in every direction from kayaks and stand-up paddle boards are astounding. Cut by the glacier, the intimate 10-acre body of water is like a giant bottomless swimming pool. A dramatic 2,500 vertical foot ice-enshrouded granite tooth rises from the lake.

Today we leave the peuma Lodge and have a 50 minute drive to the trailhead of Salto Tronador. As we walk through a lush forest full of ferns and moss we can hear the thunderous water fall in the distance. This trail passes a handful of beautiful 10-30 foot sliding falls as the river cuts through the granite bedrock. At close to 700 feet in height this waterfall is one of the tallest in Chile. The viewing area is wet from the tremendous mist the falls creates so its a good idea to bring a change of clothes or a bathing suit along with you you. As we get back to the bus we can change and then drive 1:30 past stunning Lago yelcho to the Yelcho Lodge where we spend the last night.

Trip Extension Ideas
Arriving through Argentina or adding an extension to the trip is possible. Since 80% of our travelers add extra time before or after the Futaleufú, Puerto Varas is the perfect gateway. For more inspiration on how to extend your trip, see our guide: Before & After the Futaleufú: Puerto Varas.
Towns like Isla Chiloé, Puerto Montt, and Dalcahue are all within a scenic 7-8 hour drive/ferry from Futaleufu, making them ideal extensions before or after your trip, and offer a rich mix of culture, cuisine, and coastal charm. On Chiloé, explore colorful stilt houses, UNESCO-listed wooden churches, and local myths, with chances to see penguins and hike misty forests. Nearby Puerto Montt serves as the region’s bustling gateway, but most guests will prefer the quiet, lakeside town of Puerto Varas. Just across the water, the artisan town of Dalcahue invites visitors to browse handicrafts, sample traditional curanto, and soak in island life at a slower pace.
THROUGH ARGENTINA
Another excellent option is to begin your journey in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The city offers direct flights from many U.S. and Canadian hubs and is a more vibrant, culturally rich entry point than Santiago. With extra time, you can enjoy Buenos Aires’ European-style boulevards, tango shows, world-class steak houses, and colorful neighborhoods like La Boca and San Telmo.
From Buenos Aires, it’s a short domestic flight to Bariloche, one of Patagonia’s most famous mountain towns. Known for its alpine scenery, Swiss-inspired architecture, hiking trails, chocolate shops, and fishing, Bariloche is a destination worth exploring in its own right. From Bariloche, it’s just a 4.5-hour drive across the Andes to reach Futaleufú, Chile.
Border Crossing
Crossing the border between Argentina and Chile at Paso Cardenal Samoré or Futaleufú crossing points is straightforward. Travelers need a valid passport, and U.S./Canadian citizens do not require a visa for stays under 90 days in either country. Customs is generally efficient and private transfers or bus options are available.
Many of our travelers combine Buenos Aires + Bariloche + Futaleufu for a well-rounded Patagonia experience.
